A keynote challenged the room with a bold vision. What stayed with me wasn't the keynote itself, but a bigger question: what will it really take to turn ambition into action?

Some conferences leave you with pages of notes. Others leave you with a single question that stays with you long after you’ve left the room.

Climate Innovation Forum was the latter.

The keynote centred on an ambitious challenge: How can the UK lead the world in nature recovery? It was presented as a vision shared by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and it set the tone for the conversations that followed.

It’s an important question, but I found myself thinking less about the vision itself and more about what it actually takes to make a vision real.

For years we’ve become comfortable talking about biodiversity, natural capital, regenerative farming, carbon, economic growth and community resilience as if they exist in separate worlds. They don’t. They’re all expressions of the same living system, yet we continue trying to solve them through fragmented conversations.

Sitting in the audience, it felt as though something is beginning to shift.

There was a growing recognition that nature recovery isn’t simply an environmental challenge. It’s an economic one. A business one. A leadership one. The organisations that thrive over the next decade are likely to be those that understand that restoring nature isn’t a cost to manage but an asset to invest in.

That resonates deeply with the work we’re doing through ReGenerate.

We’ve never set out to build another business network. We’ve been creating an ecosystem where people from different disciplines can come together, challenge each other’s thinking and work on real projects that reconnect economy and ecology. Listening to the keynote, it struck me that this isn’t a fringe conversation anymore. It’s becoming part of the national narrative.

Of course, speeches are the easy part.

The harder question is how that vision finds its way into farms, businesses, local authorities, universities and communities. How do we create places where collaboration happens naturally rather than being forced? How do we move from ambition to action?

Those are the questions that interest me most.

If the UK is serious about leading the world in nature recovery, it won’t happen because of one policy or one department. It will happen because thousands of people, organisations and places begin working differently together.

Perhaps that’s where leadership really starts—not with having the vision, but with creating the conditions for it to take root

Looking Ahead

The real story is rarely the event itself. It’s what happens next. I’ll continue following the people, places and projects turning today’s conversations into tomorrow’s action.
